The Revelation that Jesus builds His church on!

The Rock That Holds It All Together

Have you ever had one of those moments where something just clicks? Maybe you've been trying to figure something out for a while, and then—bam!—suddenly, it all makes sense. Those moments are powerful because they change how we see things moving forward.

Peter had one of those moments with Jesus in Matthew 16:13-19.

Jesus asked His disciples a simple but loaded question:

"Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" (v. 13)

They tossed around some answers—John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, or some other prophet. But then Jesus turned the question toward them:

"But what about you? Who do you say I am?" (v. 15)

And this is where Peter had his lightbulb moment. He didn’t just repeat what others were saying. He declared:

"You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." (v. 16)

Jesus didn’t just nod and move on—He celebrated Peter’s revelation. He told him, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven." (v. 17)

And then Jesus said something incredible:

"And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it." (v. 18)

Now, some people think Jesus was saying Peter himself was the rock He would build the church on. But if we look closer, Jesus wasn’t talking about Peter the person—He was talking about the revelation Peter had just spoken.

The foundation of the church—the thing that holds it all together—is the revelation of who Jesus is.

Jesus Is the Foundation

Jesus is saying, "I can build on that. I can build my church on people who know who I really am."

This is why what we believe about Jesus is so important. If we think He’s just a good teacher, or a wise prophet, or even just a miracle worker—we’re missing it. But when we know He is the Christ, the Son of the living God—when we understand that He alone is our Savior, our Redeemer, our Hope—that’s when everything changes.

That’s the kind of faith Jesus builds His church on. Not man-made religion, not personal opinions, not traditions—but the unshakable truth of who He is.

What’s Your Revelation?

Jesus asked the disciples, "Who do you say I am?" That’s the question He still asks each of us today.

It’s easy to repeat what we’ve heard in church or what our parents taught us. But at the end of the day, our faith has to be personal. We have to know for ourselves who Jesus is.

And here’s the beautiful part: When we have that revelation—when we truly know Jesus as the Christ—our lives become something He can build on.

Our faith becomes firm. Our purpose becomes clear. And no matter what storms come, we stand strong because we’re built on the Rock.

So, let me ask you: Who do you say Jesus is?

That answer changes everything.

in Him,

Heather Bradley
