“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” – Romans 12:1 (NIV)
Consecration. It’s not just a one-time decision—it’s a daily lifestyle of surrender. It’s waking up each day and saying, “Jesus, my life belongs to You. Have Your way in me.”
In a world that constantly pulls us in different directions, consecration is our intentional choice to set ourselves apart for God, giving Him full access to every part of our lives. It’s not about perfection but about pursuit—pursuing Jesus with all we are and inviting Him into every detail of our lives.
What Does It Mean to Live a Consecrated Life?
Consecration means offering ourselves completely to God. It’s saying, “Lord, I surrender my body, my thoughts, my actions, my money, my relationships, my career, and my dreams to You. Let everything I do bring You glory.”
This kind of surrender doesn’t come naturally. It’s a daily choice to let go of control and trust that His ways are better than ours. It’s about realigning our desires with His and allowing Him to refine us.
How Do We Walk in Consecration?
Here are some practical ways to cultivate a lifestyle of consecration:
1. Prayer: Inviting Him In
Consecration starts with prayer—inviting Jesus into every area of our lives. Ask Him to search your heart and reveal anything that needs to be surrendered. Make time daily to sit with Him, talk to Him, and listen for His voice.
Action Step: Take five minutes today to sit in stillness before God. Ask Him, “Lord, is there any area of my life that I haven’t fully surrendered to You?”
2. Fasting: Disciplining the Flesh
Fasting from food is a powerful way to discipline our flesh and break free from bondage. There are spiritual battles that can only be won through fasting and prayer. Jesus said, “This kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” (Matthew 17:21, NKJV). When we fast, we deny our flesh and align our spirit with God, allowing Him to move in deeper ways.
Fasting isn’t just about giving something up—it’s about replacing that time with seeking Jesus. While fasting from things like social media or entertainment can be helpful, fasting from food carries a unique spiritual significance. It humbles us and brings us into deeper dependence on God.
Action Step: Ask God if He is calling you to a fast. Start with a meal or a day, using that time to pray and seek His presence.
3. Sitting in His Presence: Abiding in Him
Consecration isn’t just about giving things up—it’s about drawing close to Jesus. He longs to be with us, to speak to us, to love us. We must learn to abide in His presence, making room for Him in our busy lives.
Action Step: Set a timer for 10 minutes today and just sit with Jesus—no agenda, no requests. Just be with Him.
4. Surrendering Every Area of Life
True consecration touches every part of who we are—our bodies, minds, relationships, finances, careers, and ministries. When we surrender all these areas to God, we invite Him to move powerfully in them.
Action Step: Make a list of areas in your life where you need to surrender more fully to Jesus. Pray over each one and ask Him to take control.
Special Seasons of Deeper Consecration
While consecration is a daily lifestyle, there are also specific times when Jesus calls us to be set apart in a deeper way. These are moments when He wants to refine us, draw us closer, and do something new within us. Sometimes, He calls us into a season of intense prayer, fasting, or separation from distractions so that He can prepare us for the next step in our journey with Him.
If you sense God calling you into a deeper season of consecration, don’t resist it. Lean in. He may be wanting to remove things from your life that are hindering you, or He may be drawing you into a greater level of intimacy with Him.
Action Step: Ask the Lord if He is leading you into a special season of consecration. If so, be obedient and set yourself apart for Him.
The Beauty of a Consecrated Life
A life set apart for Jesus is a life filled with His presence, peace, and power. The more we give to Him, the more we experience His faithfulness. This journey of consecration isn’t about rules or religious duty—it’s about relationship. It’s about knowing and loving Jesus more each day.
Will you choose today to live a lifestyle of consecration?
